School Council Meet Her Honour, The High Sheriff of Gwent, Helen Mifflin

School Council Members, Deputy headteacher meet the High Sheriff of Gwent

On Wednesday 19th March the School Council were honoured to have the High Sheriff of Gwent and Counsellor Mogford attend their School Council meeting. We had the opportunity to ask questions about her role as High Sheriff. We found out that she was appointed by the King and she served as  a Judge in a High Court. As High Sheriff she has done lots of charity work to help children and attended many events. She talked to us about her special clothing and said when she finishes her term of office she will donate her clothes to Newport Museum. She explained her badge to us and told us about the swords. One sword symbolises mercy and the other symbolises justice. We showed her our climbing frame and asked her to help us to get it fixed or a new one.We cannot wait for her honour to visit us again.

Grand School Council Event

Mrs McCormick, Niamh and Ade attended a Grand School Council event on Tuesday 18th February at Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed in Duffryn. Our first item on the agenda was to meet the Leader, Cllr Batrouni in a question and answer session with other School Council members from Newport. Only 5 questions were allowed and our school was chosen to ask the first question, “What is your vision for the pupils of Newport?” The Counsellor answered that he wanted every child to have the same learning opportunities across Newport so they could be the best they can be and get a good job. We then attended three workshops. In the first workshop we discussed attendance and why it is important to go to school every day, we shared what we do with other schools to encourage good attendance. In our next workshop we met representatives from GEMS (Gwent Education Multilingual Service) and in our group we shared our many different languages. We were spoken to in Polish and realised straight away how difficult it must for children starting a new school with English as a second language. We talked about ways in which we could support them. In our final workshop with Newport Live we shared what we did in our community and what we thought we needed more of. We are going to ask every pupil in our school what they would like on the Underwood estate and feed this back at our next meeting in June. It was a really good day and an opportunity to talk with fellow School Council members.
